Clarity Photography bio picture

Hey there!

My name is Tammy and I'm a Tyler, Texas based photographer, busy Mom of two boys, and wife to a great (and handsome!) guy.  Life is busy, fast paced and chaotic, and I love every minute of it!

On the professional front, I mostly photograph babies, children, and families.  I shoot on location using natural light or at my studio space in downtown Tyler.  The studio offers natural light shooting as well as the option of studio lighting.  I strive to produce timeless images with a modern edge, classic yet unexpected.

I absolutely love what I do and pride myself on being able to 100% relate to my clients.  More than anything, I'm a Mom.  I know what it feels like to be 8 months pregnant, or hold your newborn baby in all their snuggly newness.  I know how funny (and not funny!) a two year old can be, or how at times, you can be with your family and realize there is no other place on earth you'd rather be. These are the moments I know are fleeting, sometimes funny and above all, precious.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you like what you see  :)

meet the mckellars | tyler tx photographer

Last week, Vanessa and Brent McKellar of Vanessa McKellar Productions came by the studio for a quick little session.  You must know going in, Vanessa and Brent make up a most fabulous team as husband and wife and as AMAZING wedding videographers.  Seriously, if you know someone who is planning a wedding, I urge you to refer them to the above link and check out their work.  They have a way of capturing a wedding day with amazing cinematic styling — artistic, romantic, loaded with details, and chock full of emotion.

Since Brent and Vanessa are being featured in a magazine about their recent work with the Super 8 camera/film, they needed some fun shots of them with their equipment.  If you aren’t familiar with what Super 8 is, think about that intro to “The Wonder Years” where Kevin is waving at the camera, laughing… remember that?  That was Super 8 film and it’s making a resurgence in the film making industry.  It’s warm, it’s vintage, it’s cool.  Just what we wanted to portray in the images.  Check out some of my (many!) favorites:

A little James Bond-ish action:

And I love this one — they’ve got the room covered, nothing gets past ‘em  ;)

#3 | tyler texas pregnancy photography

I “met” *K* about 5 years ago, via an iVillage message board when I was pregnant with Cullen and she was pregnant with her oldest little boy *R*.  The message board was for babies who were due in June 2005 and was basically a place to ask questions, commiserate, and get to know other Moms.  Once the June babies were born, you then became a “play group” and a whole new chapter of questions and commiserating began!  Over the last five years, I have fallen off of the message board (due to lack of time), but *K* and I have kept in contact.  She lives a couple of hours away in the Dallas/Fort Worth area but thanks to social networking sites, we have been able to keep up with one another.  We have both had our second little boys and now, *K* is expecting her third.  This time, a little girl.  :)   I was so happy when she emailed and asked about the family making the trek to Tyler for a session.  I loved being able to document the final weeks (she is due any day now!) in this new chapter of their lives…

Here’s *K*, in one of my favorite shots from the day…  I think she looks bee-u-tee-ful.  Honestly, I have never seen such a tiny, perfectly round tummy.  It’s like she has a little volleyball tucked away in there instead of a baby girl!

kelly-tyler-tx-pregnancy-photographerAnother favorite, this time with her husband *S*, who was a trooper for the entire session (cue applause, please!):

kelly4-tyler-tx-pregnancy-photographerA few more of *K*…

kelly2-tyler-tx-pregnancy-photographerkelly3-tyler-tx-pregnancy-photographerAnd finally, we captured a few shots of Mom and her boys.  I had intended to capture more serious shots of the three of them together, but honestly, the boys were funny.  The more I laughed at them, the harder they and *K* would laugh and I ended up loving how “real” these are (if you are a Mom of boys, you can relate!).  Plus, I think *K*’s smile is amazing in these images, she truly looks in her element:

kelly5-tyler-tx-pregnancy-photographerThanks *H* family for coming to see me!  I can’t wait to hear all the news of baby girls arrival – lots of luck!

Until next time,

Tammy

attention all moms | tyler texas child photographer

I bet you are wondering what to get your husband for Father’s Day, right?  You’ve probably ruled out all the traditional/boring gifts like ties, cologne, golf accessories, gadgets, and coffee cups… and you are left feeling totally and utterly uninspired.  Right?  So, thank goodness for me, I have an amazing gift idea for you!  :)

I can count on two fingers the number of photos around my house that actually have me in them.  And neither of those images have me with both of my boys.  Don’t you think Dad would adore a photo of you (the one who is always *behind* the camera taking pictures, the one who is never actually in them), with his favorite little people?  If so, this is just perfect for you!

A special only for Mommy’s and their babies (little and big), limited to 5 appointments, on Saturday, May 29th only:

Dad's Day promo

Interested?  Contact me ASAP for one of the five appointments.  See you soon!

Until next time,

Tammy

my cullen (the non edward variety) | tyler tx child photographer

So, I heard yesterday that the name ‘Cullen’ is the boy name that made the largest climb in popularity last year.  This is due to the uber-popular “Twilight” series of books (maybe you’ve heard of these little manuscripts?)  :)   One of the main characters (a vampire no less) is named Edward Cullen, so naturally, overnight, the name has become “trendy”.

It’s really not a big deal, but I tried so hard to come up with names for my boys that were strong, and “different” without being “weird”.  I wanted names that would stand the test of time and not be dated (i.e. my own name which is very a la 1960-ish).  So, even though I truly love the name, I do feel a little disappointment knowing that it’s not as “different” as I thought it would be.

All that being said, I thought I would share a quick shot of my own Cullen taken a few days ago – it was a rare moment of him being still and quiet (well, he is never truly quiet unless he is sleeping, so maybe I should say, he was more quiet than normal!).  When I look at this image, I’m so surprised at the little boy staring back at me.  He’s not a toddler any more, he’s a real little boy.  One who likes bugs, playing in the dirt and laughs hysterically at any noise that sounds like a bodily function (um, ew).  So, popular vampire name or not, he’s my Cullen.  And anyway, he was Cullen before being named Cullen was cool.   :)

Until next time,

Tammy

May 11, 2010 - 10:24 am Claire Dupuis - Tam, a gorgeous and meaningful picture of an equally wonderful little boy, I'd SO love to meet him one day.

I loved Emma before Rachel on friends made it go through the roof! sorry for the book ;) and the beautiful image is timeless!

May 11, 2010 - 9:36 pm rachael - awesome shot, what a cutie!

May 11, 2010 - 10:33 pm Emma - That is a beautiful shot..!!

May 12, 2010 - 10:41 am Mandy - Awww...he's precious!

May 12, 2010 - 11:46 am karen - Tam...I know you are disappointed that the name has become more common, however, once you meet our Cullen, you realize what an uncommon and rare child he really is. He has such empathy towards others, never wanting to hurt anyone's feelings, and he is such a bright and enthusiastic little boy. So, no matter what his name is, or how popular the name may be, he is one in a million to us.

{family} | kilgore, texas children and family photographer

This sweet family is a repeat client, in fact, I have been photographing little *a* since she was in the womb!  This was their first “family” session and I loved watching the interaction between the three of them.  In fact, this session is an example of why I should never call what I do a “job” — I laughed a *lot* during this session.  Honestly, it’s just fun watching a family be happy together  :)

Hmmm… this little face, I couldn’t resist capturing the expression as it unfolded.  Naughty or nice?  You decide:

tayna2-tyler-texas-child-photographerI loved it the moment I shot it, it just makes me smile:

baby bump | longview, texas maternity photographer

Lucky me, one of my favorites, a maternity session!  This time, with an adorable couple from Longview who is expecting a little girl (baby *b*).  Even though it was threatening rain at any given moment, we decided to leave the studio and try a little shooting in nearby downtown.  And I have to say, I was so happy that we did!  I loved what we ended up with, and I hope you do too…

taren7-longview-texas-maternity-photographer

taren2-longview-texas-maternity-photographerLove, love, love (did I mention love?) this next one:

taren-longview-texas-maternity-photographySo, even though I have a bunch of other favorites from downtown,  I wanted to show off some of the studio stuff too… aren’t they a gorgeous couple?

taren4-longview-texas-maternity-photographyNext a couple of *T* by herself … I wonder if baby *b* is going to be a redhead like her Mommy?

taren5-longview-texas-maternity-photographerAnother favorite, I love how clean and simple it is:

taren6-longview-texas-maernity-photographyThanks to *t* and *b* for coming to Tyler for me to photograph this special time in your lives.  I can’t wait to meet baby girl *b*.  Gallery coming in a few days, hang tight!

Until next time,

Tammy

April 26, 2010 - 4:43 pm Claire - Tam, this last one in B&W must be the most gorgeous maternity photo I EVER saw. I also love the second one outside, the way they look at each other is precious. But that last one, damn ! SO beautiful... Love, Claire.

Family Fun, Alex M style | tyler texas family photographer

Over the last year or so, I have been incredibly lucky to become good friends with several of my photography peers in the area.  I love having a group of friends who know exactly what I mean when I utter any of the following words/phrases:  f1.2, iso, tilt shift, back lit, alien bee.  Or having a friend who can help me find “the sweet light” in any given room or situation, in under .02 seconds.

One of these awesome peeps, is wedding photographer, Alex M .  Not only is Alex an amazing wedding photographer, he’s also a super nice guy *and* a great husband and Dad to 4 really cute little people.  So, you can imagine I was pretty nervous stoked when Alex asked me to photograph his family.  I mean, photographing another photographer is a little different.  They totally know what you are or are *not* doing right  :)   Plus, everyone has their own distinct sense of photography style that they like (or else they wouldn’t shoot that way!).  My style is soft and warm and fuzzy compared to Alex’s more modern, rock-star, humorous style.  All that said, we had a great time and even though we had some major things to overcome (locked gates, crazy cows, FULL sun (a photographer’s worst friend!), a grumpy old lady, ants, a few tears) we ended up with some awesome imagery.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed shooting it.  Gear up friends, this is a long one:

Okay, quick story on the first image… the truck (that I LOVE)  in the image is one that was a little difficult to get to.  The people that owned the property, that assured me they would be there on the shoot day, weren’t there.  So, what other choice did we have, but to trespass climb a fence?  So, imagine all seven of us, plus my gear, plus a ladder, making it over barbed wire fence.  Thank goodness there was this really HUGE guy, with big muscles there to help all of us make it over  ;)   The climb was worth it, don’t you think? ::

alex-tyler-texas-family-photographerA little family fun in the sea of yellow that surrounded us:

alex2-tyler-texas-family-photographer

And I really like the simplicity of this one, a family together:

alex3-tyler-texas-family-photographerAs we were shooting in the field, a little herd of cows began to make their way towards us… normally, this would not be a big deal.  But, these cows were “different”.  They were aggressive and mean.  Totally out to get us!  Well, not really, but the kids seemed to think so  :)   So this last image, came after both Alex and I had jumped through lots of hoops to keep the cows at a somewhat “safe” distance and the kids were a little emotional at the entire experience.  But, I love this image of Alex and his wife, Danielle, with their brood.  You can see the humor on their faces about the situation and the little “pile” of children on top of them wearing completely different expressions…

alex4-tyler-texas-family-photographerNext up, a few shots of just Alex and Danielle (which every married couple need!).  You have to know going in Alex is a pretty funny guy and Danielle is super sweet and a little quiet.  I think she spends a lot of her day (in between taking care of four children) laughing at Alex.  See exhibit “A” :

alex8-tyler-texas-family-photographerBut, I did capture a sweeter side of them too:

alex7-tyler-texas-family-photographerAnd this next series, I love, love, love!  I so *heart* how their expressions reflect each others.  And isn’t Danielle seriously cute?!?

alex6-tyler-texas-family-photographer

Next, another family shot.  This image is one that Alex had in mind of he and Danielle with the kids and I do love it.  Their youngest, Eli, crying is really what made the shot for me – a true snapshot of a day in the life with kiddos…alex5-tyler-texas-family-photographerFinally, we made our way to another field and let the “M” family just be.  While they were just “be-ing”, I captured this one of Alex and Jo, catching some major air and I have to say, it’s fab-u-lous right down to the flying flip-flops and Alex’s priceless expression:

alex9-tyler-texas-family-photographerThanks “M” family for letting me capture you being “you”, I loved every minute of it!

Until next time,

Tammy

April 19, 2010 - 5:05 pm Danielle - Tammy! These are great! I can't wait until the kids go to bed and alex and i can look over them reaallllyyyy slooowwww. :) our kids had a blast. Thank you for capturing "us." We love them the pics and can't wait to see the rest! Haha. Jk

April 19, 2010 - 5:30 pm AlexM - We totally love them. Our kids had a blast and the whole process was so much fun. It was so great that you just let our kids run around and act crazy and it did not phase you one bit. That last image of Jo and I may be my favorite photo ever. You are great at what you do and I always love seeing your work. (The fact that it's my family makes it that much better. ;)) We may even have to have another kid just to get a newborn session in. :)

April 19, 2010 - 6:15 pm Vanessa McKellar - Ahhh, I love them! I seriously got warm fuzzies looking at them and also reading your background info. You are SO talented and I know that Alex is really really happy with these.

April 19, 2010 - 6:45 pm Tammy - You guys are all so sweet :) Thanks for the comment love and for being good friends!

April 20, 2010 - 12:38 am Brandi Burkett - Awesome job! The full sun gives me more shudders than any other obstacles you mentioned, haha! You did a great job of overcoming the challenges and producing a body of work that is sweet, thoughtful and very relevant to their personal style. The fourth and fifth images are my favorites. The shot of them sitting in the shade of the truck is a great example of why we use the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words". Very nicely done :)

April 20, 2010 - 2:55 am Claire - Tam, that is one cool session !!! I especially love all the ones that don't have the sky for a background, like sitting next to the truck, the brick wall, etc. Of course, the flying kiddo is astonishing, fantastic job, and yes, that family is just awesome. Thanks for sharing !!! Claire.

April 20, 2010 - 7:54 am Wes - I love the pictures! Not only great pics that capture the M family but you guys look like you had fun time too. Great Job, Tam! Next time you guys should come see me for pictures. I can do totally do what she did, I have a really nice camera. :)

April 20, 2010 - 7:09 pm Dognbird - You nailed it!! These photos are stunning from an emotional and technical perspective.

April 21, 2010 - 8:55 am Julia - These pictures are great! I love the ones with Alex and Danielle being themselves and the one after chasing the cows.

April 21, 2010 - 12:29 pm Nina - I LOVE the one of the family & front of the truck! They are all just gorgeous! WHat a beautiful family!

April 21, 2010 - 2:22 pm Leslie - AMAZING photos! They do capture them so well!

April 30, 2010 - 9:40 pm Patrick - The Jo flying picture is indeed awesome. It reminds me of when Chsrlie Brown would get hit with a pitch and various items of his clothing would get knocked off. These are great pictures of great family.

May 5, 2010 - 10:21 pm Carmen - Love that last shot with the flip flops flying in the air too, lol...

July 28, 2010 - 2:57 pm Nova Fox - These pictures are amazing! I love, love, love the family photo where Eli is crying. Great pics!!:)

three | tyler texas child photographer

Sometimes photographing multiple children can be tough, especially if there are really young children involved.  But, I had such a great (and easy!) time photographing the sweet *F* children – almost 5 year old *W*, two year old *L* and newborn baby sister *C*.  They were a referral from another client and I am so happy they came to visit me at the studio.  Have a peek at some of my favorites:

The sometimes elusive sibling shot (so happy with this one, we even got a kiss!):

freeman-tyler-texas-children-photographerSo many favorites of *W*, he was great in front of the camera, and I had a hard time picking just a few:

one month | tyler texas baby photographer

After a great hospital session, the *G* family came back to see me for a one month visit.  As usual, I had such a great time during our session.  We were able to catch up on how things were in “newborn land” and there is never a shortage of laughs.  In fact, one of these days, I need to do an “outtake” blog post on the *G* family.  Sometimes I end up with some really funny expressions… :)

Anyway, I thought I would do something different and let baby *G* just hang out.  Sometimes, we work so hard getting the newborns all curled or placed in a basket (which I love and is always beautiful), that we miss some of who they really are.  Those adorable expressions and funny faces are a glimmer of a real little person, albeit a small, wrinkled one!  So, we just laid him down and I simply shot.

And here you have it, the many (and very cute!) faces of baby *G* :

Next, an image of Dad and baby *G* (I have a very similar shot in color of Dad and big brother on the main site):

g2-tyler-texas-newborn-photography*K* is such a good Mommy.  She’s the type who is always perfectly prepared with snacks, toys, wipes, lots of patience and fun activities.  I hope I captured what a warm and loving Mom she truly is:

g-tyler-texas-newborn-photographerAnd of course we photographed the whole family.  There were so many relaxed and fun shots, I had a hard time choosing.  But something about the happiness in this one tugs at my heart:

g3-tyler-texas-newborn-photographerAnd since I had gone outside my box earlier, I stepped right back in to do just a few curled “newborn” shots (totally making fun of myself here).  This one was a favorite:
