I’ve had several maternity sessions here lately and the big question is always, “what should I wear?”.  It can be difficult because you want something that is stylish and chic, yet comfortable, as well as finding something that accentuates your tummy.  And with the limited places to shop for maternity clothes, that can be no small feat to find the pieces to that puzzle!   This What to Wear guide is good for a mom-to-be alone, all the way up to a family maternity session.  Check it:

I always suggest bringing several items of clothing, and something like the above outfit, plus a plain black tank (can be worn with same jeans for look #2), works fab — it’s as simple as that!

It’s almost spring and to celebrate, I thought I would offer up a brand-spanking-new “What to Wear Guide”.  It’s been a while since I featured one and I am way past due to dish one up!

Since I think family sessions are the toughest to coordinate, I always try to feature those if possible, as a reference point.  This particular one is for a family who is looking to do something a little different… something slightly hip, a little retro.  Something a little outside of the proverbial box…

And if the “retro” look isn’t for you, the color palette is still a great source of inspiration.  The colors are clean, bright, and crisp.  All of which typically photograph beautifully and are very far away from the tired “let’s all wear denim and matching white shirts”.

I have so many family sessions scheduled this month and for November, I thought I would blog another “what to wear” inspiration guide. Since I know that planning and coordinating wardrobe for multiple people can be the most difficult aspect of your session,  my hope is that these help make life a little easier 

A few tips: Don’t be afraid of color or textures, they make the image more interesting and memorable (after all, who wants an image that isn’t interesting or memorable?!).  Also, think of a few words that you would use to describe your family and use that as inspiration.  If you are a family of funny people, neutral colors and button up shirts is just going to look, um, funny (and I don’t mean funny “ha, ha”!).

Most of all, go with your gut – if you like it and you think your family will feel good in it… go for it!  More than likely, it’s going to be totally fabulous

So, I’m back with a little more “What to Wear” inspiration for family sessions.  Again, these are not meant to be set in stone, or in an effort to take the place of your family looking like “your family”.  I simply like blogging these for ideas on color schemes, clothing combination possibilities, etc.

I really like this particular grouping for it’s classic, soft and vintage feel.  Something like this would be perfect for a session in the home/backyard, a field, a garden, or park.  The soft colors would even work well in the light and bright studio.  Have a look:

Again, use this to build or expand!  Mom, if you are more comfortable in a long skirt, work with that.  If this look isn’t Dad’s norm, use the color scheme for his style… maybe a loose button up instead of a sweater.  You get the idea

So you’re all set.  You’ve officially booked a family session with me.  The date and time is chosen, session fee is taken care of, and everything is on the calendar.  You’re feeling pretty good, right?  Then, panic sets in.  You break out into a cold sweat.  A question is literally burning in your brain.

WHAT DO WE WEAR?!?

This is actually a question I get asked a lot, and even after I give suggestions of colors, how to coordinate without being “matchy-matchy” , and tips on where to shop, I still hear doubt in my clients voices when they hang up the phone.   So, I thought I would start including some visual inspiration on the blog to make things easier.

This particular ‘What to Wear Guide’ is great for just about any kind of session that is on location.  At your home, a park, a field, even an urban/downtown shoot:

And this is just a start, you can totally build on this to make it more  “you”.  Mom can add a denim jacket over the top of the dress, Dad can wear a fedora hat, you can add a funky headband for the little girl, you get the idea.  The key is to have fun and feel confident in what you are wearing.
